SEAWOLVES END RAPTORS HOME-WIN STREAK WITH 80 MINUTE PERFORMANCE
Only three games remained in the regular season as the Seawolves and Raptors faced off for the second time in the season. The Raptors had been undefeated
on their home pitch, but the Seawolves showed up in full force and proved their dominance with an astounding 53-36 win. The win and bonus points raised
the Seawolves to third place in the Major League Rugby standings.
KICK OFF: Saturday, May 18 at 3:00 PM PT
The Seawolves received the first kick to start the game. A quick string of phases by the Raptors led to an early try, 0-7. Seattle answered back with a
try of their own by Stephan Coetzee, but a missed conversion by Brock Staller kept Glendale ahead, 5-7. The Seawolves built off momentum and got a
quick second try by Staller. The kick went to the left however, 10-7 Seawolves were in the lead. Continuing to build off their momentum, a Phil Mack
pass to George Barton found another gap in the Raptors defense and a chance to soar through for a third try. Staller made the conversion, 17-7 Seawolves.
20 MINUTES:
The Seawolves received a penalty for side entry at the breakdown and the Raptors opted for a kick. The kick was good, 17-10 at minute 23. It looked like
the Raptors would shift momentum as they neared the try line, but a successful scrum by the Seawolves gave them the opportunity to charge down the
pitch. Staller took off down the sideline before dishing to Mat Turner, who raced past the Raptors for the fourth Seawolves try, securing a bonus point
and raising the score to 24-10. The Raptors knew they had to answer back and moved quickly for a try and another conversion, 24-17. Raptors were strong
on the attack and found another try under the sticks to tie it up, 24-24. Before the half ended, the Seawolves received a penalty in their favor and
chose to kick for points to take the lead, 27-24 at the half.
40 MINUTES:
The second half started with a try by the Seawolves as they mauled over the line and Stephan Coetzee touched down for his second try of the game. Staller
was back in form with a conversion which raised the score to 34-24 Seawolves. The Raptors struck back with a try and conversion to add some pressure
to the Seawolves, 34-31. On the restart the Raptors looked strong in their phases, until JP Smith flew in to snatch the ball in Glendale territory
and walk in for a try. Conversion by Staller brought the score to 41-31 at minute 48.
60 MINUTES:
JP Smith continued his breakout performance as he flew through the Raptors defense after throwing a dummy pass for his second try of the game. Staller
converted successfully to extend the lead, 48-31 Seawolves at minute 64. A spectacular string of phases from the Seawolves saw Turner into the try
zone once more. Staller missed the conversion, but the lead grew to 53-31 Seawolves. The Raptors scrambled for a try with less than ten minutes left
but missed the conversion. Score was 53-36 Seawolves at six minutes left as back and forth play ate away at the clock.
FINAL SCORE:
